The Degree Is No Longer Enough: Facing the Reality for Graduates of Colour in the UK – 2025

Let’s be honest this is an uncomfortable conversation. But it’s necessary.

In the UK in 2025, the reality facing graduates of colour is no longer something we can afford to speak about quietly, vaguely or politely. The data is now too clear, in the open and the consequences are too real.

A major UCL-led study published in 2025 titl;ed "UK employers less likely to recruit disadvantaged ethnic minority graduates"found that:

This means that talent, effort and academic success alone are not delivering equal outcomes. Not because young people aren’t capable. Not because they’re not trying. But because recruitment systems whether human or automated are still layered with bias, unequal access and structural disadvantage. This is not perception. This is evidence.

The Market Is Hard — But Not for Everyone in the Same Way

Let’s be clear: the graduate job market is tough for all young people right now.

But the UCL research alongside other peer-reviewed studies shows that graduates of colour, especially from working-class backgrounds, face additional barriers even before interviews begin.

Many are filtered out during:

The result?

High-potential candidates that may not pass that first scrutiny gate disappear from recruitment funnels before anyone even meets them.

This Is the Part We Need to Be Honest About

Most parents, students, graduates know this is happening, yet many are still moving through education believing the old promise:

That promise no longer holds true on its own.

A degree has become a basic entry requirement, not a competitive advantage.

Thousands of graduates now hold:

In a market like this, employers look beyond academic performance to assess:

This is where inequality quietly shows up because access to these spaces of development is not evenly distributed.

Let us not be victims, Crying Alone Won’t Create Careers

We must challenge bias. We must push for fairer recruitment systems. We must speak up.

But while systems evolve slowly, young people need jobs now.

Waiting for the playing field to become fair before preparing our children to compete on it makes them casualties not beneficiaries of systemic change.

So the Real Question Is This:

What Are We Doing to Help Build Competitive Advantage?

Because courage without strategy leaves young people exposed. In today’s market, graduates who succeed do not rely on their degree alone, they build a stack of employability advantages around it.

The Competitive Advantage Stack

✅ 1. Real Work Experience

Internships, volunteering, charity leadership roles, project placements, freelancing these prove workplace capability.

Employers hire evidence, not promise.

✅ 2. High-Demand Skills

Skills that organisations urgently need:

Degrees demonstrate knowledge skills demonstrate usefulness.

✅ 3. Commercial Awareness

Understanding:

Graduates who cannot speak this language struggle at assessment and interview.

✅ 4. Confidence & Communication

Brilliant students lose opportunities because they:

Communication isn’t cosmetic, it’s employability currency.

✅ 5. Networks & Mentors

The “hidden job market” remains real.

Roles are filled via:

Graduates without structured networks move slower because they must navigate opportunity blindfolded.

✅ 6. Psychological Resilience

Repeated rejection damages confidence quickly.

Coaching that nurtures:

is now career preparation, not therapy, so are you engaging a coach or mentor?

Parents: This Is Our Wake-Up Call

Education alone is no longer enough to protect our young people.

Parents we must begin asking:

Encouragement without strategy leaves students intellectually qualified but professionally unprepared.

Students: This Is Your Call to Action

🔹 Build employability from Year One of study not graduation panic time

🔹 Choose work and study aligned to future career goals

🔹 Learn recruitment skills, interviews, assessments, applications as an ongoing skill to build confidence

🔹 Develop digital & AI capability

🔹 Build your professional brand early

🔹 Seek mentors relentlessly

🔹 Engage coaches if needed

The rules have changed.

Let’s Stop Pretending Otherwise

The evidence is clear:

Pretending we live in an equal graduate labour market doesn’t protect anyone.

Preparing young people with real-world competitive advantages does.

The Final Reality

Agility is now the real qualification.

Agility means:

Those who combine degree + skills + confidence + networks progress.

Those relying on degree alone increasingly struggle regardless of intelligence or work ethic.

The Question We Must All Answer

Are we burying our heads like the ostrich - or facing reality and responding with preparation?

Because the job market isn’t waiting……and our graduates deserve better than being sent into it under-equipped.

First They Blamed Foreigners for Taking Jobs. Now AI Is Coming for Work. Who Do We Blame Next?

By Lloyd Munyaviri | L2MCoaching After Blaming Foreigners, Who Do We Blame When AI Takes the Jobs? For years, in many societies, when people have felt economically squeezed, one of the easiest narratives has been: “foreigners are taking our jobs.” We have heard it in the UK. We have heard it in South Africa. We have heard it in communities where people are struggling with unemployment, poor wages, insecure work, rising costs, stretched public services and a deep sense that life is becoming...

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗻, 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 “𝗡𝗼” — 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

As part of the Monthly Connect Better Podcast Series we run at L2MCoaching (everyone is invited) once a month, a number of topics for discussion are suggested and this one is a popular request and I hope to do it justice: In relationships, one of the hardest conversations to have is the conversation about rejection, intimacy, emotional needs and unmet expectations. It is a sensitive subject because it can easily be misunderstood. When a partner says “no”, that “no” must be respected. No one...

Education Is Not the Answer. It’s the Beginning.

Why knowledge alone is not enough and what we need to learn instead. We’ve been conditioned to believe something powerful: “Education is the answer.” Say it enough times, and it becomes truth. Build systems around it, and it becomes policy.Repeat it to selves and our children and it becomes belief. But let’s pause for a moment and ask a question that rarely gets asked: Education… then what? Because if education truly was the answer, we wouldn’t have so many educated people feeling stuck,...
