True Inclusion: It's More Than Just Being Invited to the Dance
When we talk about inclusion, we often hear the popular metaphor:
“Diversity is being invited to the dance. Inclusion is being asked to dance.”
But I’d like to take it one step further.
True inclusion isn’t just being asked to dance, It’s about having a voice in the decision to even hold a dance in the first place.
Let me explain.
✅ Being Invited to the Dance = Participation
You're allowed to show up. You're welcome. But you’re arriving after the plans have already been made.
✅ Being on the Dance Committee = Planning
You’re now involved in shaping the event — choosing the music, selecting the venue, maybe even managing the guest list.
🔑 But True Inclusion?
That’s being involved from the very beginning — when the idea of having a dance is still just a thought. It’s being in the room where the first questions are asked:“Do we need a dance?” “What purpose does it serve?” “Who will it benefit?”
This is co-creation at its core. It’s not about symbolic gestures or checking boxes. It’s about shaping the purpose, the direction, and the meaning of an initiative together — from the ground up.
Why This Matters
In leadership, in teams, in families — and yes, even in coaching — authentic inclusion creates deeper trust, higher engagement, and more impactful results.
It builds cultures where people don’t just feel seen, but heard.Where they don’t just feel welcomed, but valued.Where they don’t just contribute, but co-create.
At L2M Coaching & Mentoring, we believe inclusion must start at the foundation. It’s not an afterthought — it’s a way of thinking, leading, and living.
Reflection Prompt:
Where in your life or work are you inviting people to the dance… but not yet giving them a say in whether the dance happens at all?
That’s where true inclusion begins.
